3 Day Fast Instructions

Since humans were kicked out of the garden in Genesis 3, our world has been filled with pain and anguish. This current season in our world is no different. Although Jesus is King and His resurrection gives us hope beyond any circumstance, the struggle is real. Until He returns, we sit in the tension of being saved and yet not fully experiencing the peace Heaven has to offer. Since there is an incredible amount of tension, division, pain, and sickness running through our country and the world, it is a good idea to stop and lean into our great God.

How to Fast

There is a great tradition in our faith of fasting. The goal is to remove something from our daily routines that creates need. Then, when we are hungry or itching to check social media, we turn to God for help, we pray, and we listen. For this fast, we want to plead with God to rescue His world and bring a new wave of peace, unity, and health.

Dates of Fast

Day 1 – Tuesday, June 16

Day 2 – Wednesday, June 17

Day 3 – Thursday, June 18

*If for some reason these days don’t work out for you, then make a personal adjustment and fast a different three days. If you can, then join us and let’s do this as a family.

What to Fast

You can choose whatever you like to fast. Ask what it is that will impact your daily routine and be difficult enough to create a true hunger that will lead to authentic prayer.

  • Digital Detox – We have been engulfed by screen time. Be intentional about shutting down all social media, TV, and Zoom meetings.
  • Water Only Fast – Drink water, but don’t eat any other food. (Know your limits).
  • Daniel Fast – No bread, meat, sugar, or alcohol
  • Custom Fast – Feel free to create your own rules for the fast. Maybe you exercise a lot and want to give it up because it will make you think. Maybe you only eat food when it is dark and water when it is light. Maybe you should fast from speaking. You know you best. What will lead you to authentic interaction and dependence on God?

Prayer Invitations

Fasting is about connecting with God as your cravings create want. You are free to lean into God’s comforting presence as you like, but we want to be very intentional about praying for certain pains in our world during this particular fast. Please join us on these days and at these times to pray.

Day 1

Pray for healing for the sick – COVID-19 has impacted thousands of lives either directly or indirectly. Let us cry out to God, the great physician, for healing for the sick and blessing for the medical system.

Morning Prayer Time – Read Psalm 103. Pray that God heals those that are sick and provides an end to the pandemic.

Midday Prayer Time – Read Matthew 6:9b-13 and recite the Lord’s prayer. Pray that Jesus’s Kingdom would come, and Heaven would be one with Earth.

Evening Prayer Time – Pray for the doctors, nurses, and medical staff that are on the front lines of the pandemic. Pray for the researches who are looking for a cure.

Day 2

Pray for peace – There is civil unrest across our country. Regardless of your political opinions, we must acknowledge that it is better when there is peace, unity, and safeness. Let us cry out to God for Him to bring peace and empathy to our land.

Morning Prayer Time – Read Psalm 4, Matthew 5:9, and Hebrews 12:14. Pray that God will bring peace. Pray that God will raise up leaders on all sides who advocate for peace and empathy.

Midday Prayer Time – Read Matthew 6:9b-13 and recite the Lord’s prayer. Pray that Jesus’s Kingdom would come, and Heaven would be one with Earth.

Evening Prayer Time – Pray for wholeness in our land. Pray that people would sense a calming from above and a completeness to their desires.

Day 3

Pray against racism – Since the time that Jesus walked the earth until today, certain people groups have been marginalized and not been treated fairly. Regardless of your political opinions, we would all agree that every human is child of God. We all long for justice and we don’t want anyone to be mistreated or marginalized.

Morning Prayer Time – First, read Psalm 139:23-24 and ask the Lord to reveal anything in yourself and ask Him to give you His heart for people. Read Isaiah 1:17, Isaiah 61:8, and Romans 12:9-21. Pray that there will be justice in our world. Pray that people of every color will be treated fairly. Pray that there would be justice for any and all oppression. Pray that the weak and the vulnerable will be protected and lifted up.

Midday Prayer Time – Read Matthew 6:9b-13 and recite the Lord’s prayer. Pray that Jesus’s Kingdom would come, and Heaven would be one with Earth.

Evening Prayer Time – Pray for the protection of our protestors. Pray that the voices of the oppressed are heard. Pray for protection of our police officers. Pray that our country grows closer together by seeking justice for everyone.

Journal

As you pray, listen for God to speak. What is He saying to you? What is He asking you to do next? Who is coming to mind as you pray? Write your thoughts and feelings in a journal and keep track of how you are hearing God’s gentle whisper and vivid commands.
