Who We Are

Eldership Couples

In the New Testament, we see the same office described through a variety of essentially interchangeable words (elder, overseer, bishop, shepherd, and pastor). For our purposes, we use the term ‘elder,’ but understand that it is the same function as ‘pastor.’

Our elders are not just a policy-making board of directors. Their mission is to represent Christ and lay down their lives for the church, as He did, by working together to serve, lead, and guide the church.

Our elders understand that Heritage does not belong to its leaders, but to Christ, and that it is He who builds His church (Matt. 16:18). Some of the elders serve a role on our staff, while others work full-time in the marketplace.

Peter & ELVIRA KLAUSE

Peter grew up in a Christian home in Southern California, but it wasn’t until he had a dramatic encounter with Jesus during a visit to Uruguay in 1991 that he truly had a “born again experience” and started following the Lord wholeheartedly. Peter came to Heritage in 2008, became an elder in 2012, and later came on staff as the Associate Pastor. Peter took up the mantle as Lead Elder in the summer of 2020. Peter has been married to his best friend, Elvira, since 1996 and they have three terrific kids: Lukas, Krystal & Bethany. Elvira is a surgeon, originally from Mexico. They love traveling as a family.

Patrick & Talar Moy

Patrick grew up in San Clemente and became a born-again believer at 17, at the tail end of the Jesus People revival of late ’60s and ’70s. He then served in the mission field for several years and has preached the gospel in over 50 countries. It was while he was serving the Lord in Kurdistan, Iraq, that Patrick met his wife, Talar. Patrick and Talar have been part of Heritage since 1993, and they live in San Clemente with their two boys. Patrick has brought his passion for outreach and prayer to his leadership as an elder. Professionally, Patrick works as a Chaplain and Landscape contractor and Talar is a Registered nurse.

Mike & Tammy Fanning

Mike, Tammy, and their three boys joined Heritage in the fall of 1996. Fresh out of Bible College, Mike was drawn to the vision for community, simplicity, and multiplication. In 2003, Mike joined the staff full-time as an Associate Pastor and years later was sent out as a church planter. Mike and Tammy (and their oldest son, Josh) returned to Heritage in 2020 to join the team and help out. Mike has a passion for sharing the good news and taking people deeper into “all” that God has for them. For fun, Mike enjoys just about any sport that keeps score and Tammy relishes hanging out with people, reading a good book, and soaking up the sun at the beach!

Trevor & Nicole Cummings

Trevor came to the Lord through experiencing the power of family at Heritage. In addition to eldership, Trevor has served in the Men’s Ministry, Kids Ministry, and on the Missions Board. Trevor works as a financial planner. He formerly competed as a cyclist and still enjoys staying active playing basketball, mountain biking, and ultimate frisbee. Trevor’s greatest joy is his family; his beautiful wife, Nicole, and their sons, Shepherd and Judah.

Lon & Ann-Margaret Whelan

Lon and Ann-Margaret started out in ministry by leading youth groups, before planting a church in 1997. Lon then went into business, and worked in real estate for several years. He and Ann-Margaret joined Heritage in 2007 and began serving on the eldership team. In 2017, they moved to Cape Town, South Africa to chair the board of non-profit Ikhaya Le Themba and lead a congregation in Joshua Generation Church. In 2020, they felt God calling them back to San Clemente to help serve at Heritage. Eventually they both joined the staff and in April 2023, they were prayed in as elders again.
